My name is Doug Penta and I have been playing guitar for 15 years. Looking back on my learning experience, I've realized that to truly get good at guitar, it takes 2 things: The first is inspiration and a true desire to play and have fun. When I first started, I was too young to listen to popular music, but I always aspired to be able to play an instrument. I played on and off for years, but when I was about 12 years old, I started to get into popular bands which ignited a new spark in my motivation to play. From then on, I would work hard to get better and progressed to the point where I could play almost anything. The second point may seem obvious but needs mention: Getting better will not be all fun and games and will require significant discipline and hard work. The reason why most people quit soon after they try learning is because they are easily discouraged and don't receive instant gratification. Becoming a master at guitar will take great discipline, and you will not become a Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, or Joe Satriani overnight.

That being said I would also like to tell you about my background. As I said, I started playing at 5 years old, but didn't truly get serious until I was about 12. I played in my high school jazz band, which although I can't say was a mountain of fun, certainly was key to expand my knowledge of music theory. I have also been fortunate to meet some prominent figures in the guitar/music world including Aerosmith's Tom Hamilton, Tommy Emmanuel, and Les Paul (may he rest in peace). Please feel free to take a look at some of the pictures of me with these notable music personalities.

I started this website of a desire to help people learn their favorite songs on guitar, because this is what I feel motivates people to play guitar. After learning a few songs, I then feel its best to start learning music theory and how to actually play the guitar. From here on, your learning should consist of half music theory and half learning new songs. Eventually you may get to the point where you would like to start creating you own music which can rewarding in its own right. When you finally become comfortable with playing, you will realize that playing an instrument is a great emotional outlet which you can have at your disposal as you get through life.

OK, so enough with all this talk. Let's get ready to start learning some cool songs on guitar and most importantly, have fun!

Welcome aboard and get ready to rock!
